The SIBO breath test relies on measurement of gases (Hydrogen and Methane) produced by microbiota in the intestine following ingestion of lactulose, fructose or glucose in a fasting state.
The test also measures Carbon Dioxide as an indicator of correct collection procedure. Carbon Dioxide levels exceeding acceptable limits indicate room air contamination likely at the time of sample collection.
This simple, non–invasive, gastrointestinal test detects bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine, often referred to as BOSI or SIBO. Small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a common gastrointestinal disorder that often underlies chronic gastrointestinal symptoms of maldigestion and malabsorption, including bloating, gas, diarrhea, irregularity, and abdominal pain.
Bacterial concentrations in the small intestine are normally kept to a minimum. When excessive, the delicate mucosal lining is disrupted, including the microvilli that facilitate absorption. As a result, bacterial overgrowth of the small intestine (BOSI) can inhibit nutrient absorption and lead to serious health problems.
What happens when I am diagnosed with SIBO?
Once bacterial overgrowth has been detected, intervention strategies involving diet, digestive support, probiotics and antimicrobials can be used to treat SIBO.
Successful eradication of SIBO has been shown to reduce bloating, gas, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain in patients more effectively than many other treatments for IBS.
Symptoms & Conditions Associated with SIBO:
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Unexplained abdominal symptoms
Gas and bloating
The inability to tolerate sweet or starchy foods, fibre, fermented foods or probiotics
Abdominal pain
Bad breath
Bloating (extreme bloating is common)
Brain fog
Constipation
Diarrhoea
Fatigue
Food allergies and sensitivities
MaldigestionSkin conditions
Gastrointestinal Health
The gastrointestinal tract (GI tract) has three main functions:
To digest and absorb important nutrients for the healthy growth, cell repair and function
To act as a barrier to keep harmful substances, antigens and microorganisms from entering the blood
Elimination of waste products and toxins
The GI tract influences not only GI health. It is also known as the ‘second brain’ and affects the entire body.
Within the gastrointestinal tract more than 500 different bacterial species can be found. These bacteria also play a key role in digestion, nutrient absorption, pathogen defence and immune system development. When the microbiome is out of balance, every part of the body can be affected, including the brain.
