Allergies occur when the immune system mistakenly identifies a harmless environmental or food protein (allergen) as a threat. In response, the body produces specific antibodies to attack the allergen, causing harm to the body.

The genus Candida includes about 154 species, but six are commonly found on the skin and mucous membranes as part of the body’s normal flora.

Among these, Candida albicans is the most common strain, known for causing infections when given the chance. Other strains, like Candida tropicalisCandida glabrataCandida kruseiCandida parapsilosis, and Candida lusitaniae, can also cause infections under certain conditions.

Certain factors can create an environment for Candida overgrowth, such as trauma, surgery, diseases like diabetes or Addison’s disease, medications (e.g., antibiotics, corticosteroids, oral contraceptives), weakened immunity, pregnancy, age (infants or the elderly), and malnutrition.

When Candida overgrows, it can lead to Candidiasis, which includes a wide range of infections. These can be superficial (like skin or mouth infections), localized, or more serious and deep-seated.

NutriPATH offers a test panel to evaluate Candida infections, including a semi-quantitative analysis of serum Candidaantigens and antibodies (IgG, IgA, and IgM) specific to Candida.

  • IgG antibodies: These are produced after secondary exposure to Candida. Elevated IgG levels indicate a past or ongoing infection, as this antibody persists after IgM levels decrease.
  • IgA antibodies: Found in mucous secretions, these are key to mucosal immunity. High IgA levels suggest a more localized or superficial Candida infection.
  • IgM antibodies: These are the first to form after initial exposure to Candida and indicate a current infection.

Symptoms of Candida Overgrowth:

  • Digestive issues: Bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)-like symptoms.
  • Oral thrush: White patches on the tongue or inside the mouth, soreness, and difficulty swallowing.
  • Fatigue: Persistent tiredness not relieved by rest.
  • Skin issues: Redness, itching, or rashes, particularly in moist areas (e.g., under breasts, armpits, or the groin).
  • Recurring infections: Persistent urinary tract infections (UTIs) or yeast infections.
  • Nail and foot problems: Yellow or brittle nails and athlete’s foot.
  • Brain fog: Difficulty concentrating, poor memory, or mental fatigue.
  • Cravings: Strong cravings for sugar or refined carbohydrates, which feed Candida.

Symptoms of Candida Sensitivity:
Candida sensitivity, or an immune response triggered by Candida, can overlap with overgrowth symptoms but is often more systemic. Signs may include:

  • Allergy-like symptoms: Sinus congestion, nasal drip, or itchy eyes.
  • Chronic fatigue: Feeling exhausted despite adequate sleep.
  • Joint pain: Achy joints or muscles without a clear cause.
  • Mood changes: Irritability, anxiety, or depression.
  • Skin reactions: Eczema, hives, or chronic rashes.
  • Headaches or migraines: Frequent headaches potentially linked to inflammation.
  • Food intolerances: Increased sensitivity to certain foods, especially those containing yeast or sugar.

If you're experiencing these symptoms, especially in combination, it might be worth exploring Candida overgrowth or sensitivity through testing.
